There are a variety of medicines for ADHD that will help the patient in reducing symptoms of ADHD like hyperactivity, inattentiveness, and impulsivity. Evidence has shown that behavioral therapy, dietary therapy, exercise and having plenty of sleep can help the child to manage the symptoms of ADHD.

There are different types of medicines that are used to treat ADHD,

1). Stimulants – This is the most common type of medication prescribed for ADHD which increases the dopamine levels in the brain  (like Adderall, Dexedrine, Focalin, Methylin, etc.)

2). Non Stimulants – (eg: Strattera, Intuniv, etc.)

3). Anti-hypertensives – (eg: Catapres, Tenex, etc.,.)

4). Methylphenidate drugs – (eg: Focalin XR, Metadat CD, etc.)

5). Antidepressants – This targets the multiple neurotransmitters in the brain (eg: Tofranil, Aventyl, etc.)

These medicines are FDA approved for the treatment of ADHD with a warning of heart-related or mental health problems as possible side effects.  There are no long-term studies of how these medicines will affect the child as he matures.
